The Mullerthal Trail - Luxembourg Route 2
The Mullerthal Trail: why this hike in Luxembourg should be on your bucket list.
The Mullerthal Trail had been on my list for years. One of those places whose photos you keep seeing, that friends enthusiastically tell you about, and that you keep postponing. Until last week. That's when I packed my backpack, jumped in the car with two friends, and we drove towards Luxembourg.
Four days later I was back in the Netherlands, tired but happy, and with the feeling that I had experienced something I won't soon forget. Not only because of the spectacular nature, but also because this trip reminded me of why I love hiking so much: it connects you with the place you are, with yourself, and with the people you're walking with.
In this blog, I'll share what makes the Mullerthal Trail so special, what you can expect, and what you need to know if you want to hike it yourself.
What makes the Mullerthal Trail so special?
Let's be honest: we have forests and moss in the Netherlands too. But what you find here, you won't find at home. The Mullerthal Trail takes you through a landscape of impressive rock formations, narrow passages between rock walls, and paths that wind through nature on multiple levels. It feels dramatic, adventurous, yet surprisingly accessible.

What struck me the most: the ecosystem you see everywhere. Every corner is surprising. Trees growing out of rocks, moss covering every surface, spring flowers pushing their way through the tiniest cracks. I was constantly shouting "wow," and I don't mean that dramatically. It was truly overwhelmingly beautiful.

Highlights of the route
The Perekop
This part of the route is often mentioned as one of the most beautiful sections, and rightly so. The rock formations here are spectacular, and the way the path winds through the rocks feels almost cinematic. This is why you come here.
The section near Berdorf
If I had to choose one part as my favorite? This was it. The combination of rocks, forest, and that constant alternation between intimate and expansive makes this section unforgettable. Here I truly felt like I was somewhere, far away from the Netherlands, even though it was only a few hours' drive.

Practical tips for your trip
Signposting: you don't need to touch your phone
The signage on the Mullerthal Trail is so good that you can just leave your phone in your backpack. No hassle with maps or navigation apps. Just follow the signs and walk. For me, that was wonderful. It gave me the space to truly be in the moment, without constantly checking if I was still going the right way.

Route setup: 2 or 3 days, hotel to hotel
We hiked the trail in two days: Echternach β Berdorf β Echternach. That was quite tough, but definitely doable. If you want to take it easier? Then choose three stages. You can perfectly combine the route with overnight stays in hotels or B&Bs. My tip: book a hotel as close to the trail as possible, then you literally walk from door to door and don't have to shuttle.

Condition: suitable for beginners, but tough
The route itself is not technical. You don't have to scramble, there are no difficult passages. But due to the distance and the elevation gain, it is strenuous, especially if you are not used to walking longer distances. My advice: practice with longer walks in the Netherlands first to get used to walking. Then you will feel a lot more confident and can enjoy the journey more.
What makes it different from the Netherlands?
As I said: we also have forests and moss at home. But this elevation gain, these rocks, this drama? You won't find that in the Netherlands. And yet it's only a few hours' drive. That makes the Mullerthal Trail so accessible. You don't have to travel far to experience something special.

Why this trip was extra special for me
I am someone who quickly gets overstimulated in the Netherlands when hiking with others. I love silence, my own pace, the feeling that I can completely get away. But here it felt different. Maybe because the route was so beautiful that all three of us were constantly silent. Or because the challenging nature of the trail made us help each other through the tougher parts.
Whatever it was, it felt like we were truly doing something together. And that made this trip extra valuable for me.

If you're wondering if the Mullerthal Trail is for you: just do it. It's close by, easily accessible, and absolutely worth it. Whether you go with friends or solo, in two days or three, it doesn't matter. What counts is that you go.
And if you go? Let me know. I'd love to hear how you experience the trail. π₯Ύπ
